James was admitted as a barrister and solicitor in 2002. He holds LLB (Hons) and MA (History) degrees from Victoria University of Wellington. James is also admitted as a solicitor of the Higher Courts of England and Wales. Before joining the independent bar James was at the Crown Law Office for over 13 years. James spent some of that time seconded to the Treasury Solicitor's Department in the United Kingdom. Prior to the Crown Law Office James was with a national law firm for three years.

James' areas of practice incorporate civil litigation, property, administrative and public law and disciplinary matters. A particular focus is on advising, and appearing as counsel, in cases concerning land. James' specialist expertise includes New Zealand's land title, survey and valuation systems and the powers and duties of the Crown, statutory officers and other public authorities in relation to land. James' litigation experience includes both trials and appeals and he has been counsel on cases in the courts at all levels. In addition James has conducted cases as counsel before specialist jurisdictions including the Land Valuation Tribunal and the Valuers Registration Board.
